The name of this tunnel is unknown, nor are there any plans of it.

After looking at this place for a good couple of years and doing a load of research on it i finally got in. Visited with Lynton, Fortknox, Sonic and TS08 from kentunderground.

Right a little bit of history...

I am unsure of when these tunnels were constructed or when they were extended but they were used in WW1. They where manned by reserves of the 2nd battalion West riding regiment during the 1st world war (duke of wellingtons regiment). I believe this was the southern division as there was also a northern division. This division started its costal defence at various posts around the UK from 1914 where they remained for the duration of the war.

There has since been an outfall pipe layed through the tunnel.

As i said above, there are parts of this tunnel system that look as though they have been added in more recent years. The reason for this, i am unsure of, but all the pictures that follow, are part of the same tunnel system.

Firstly is a staircase which is now capped off - this may have been added to allow easy access to the outfall pipe

At the bottom of this staircase to the right is a ledge leading into the tunnels

At the bottom the tunnel turns sharply right into the first part of the main tunnel

The tunnel then turns right and left again so it continues in the same direction. This tunnel is very long and narrow. At this point the air became really bad and the gas detector was picking up very low oxygen levels. THIS PLACE IS VERY DANGEROUS AND SHOULD NOT BE VISITED WITHOUT THE CORRECT EQUIPMENT AND TRAINING!

The tunnel continues forward onto the newly installed outfall pipe. The tunnel is now very cramped but you can get along the top of the pipe!

as you walk along the pipe there is a spur on the right leading to the original entrance, now sealed. The original gate can still be seen burried behind the wall.

looking back towards the pipe

back on the pipe now

Finally at the end of the pipe with and acheing back and a number of bumps on your head

you get to a cust section of the pipe which leads up to a manhole which surfaces in the middle of a road.

after this small chamber the pipe continues but is too small to crawl through especially with the low oxyen levels

so that was the whole of the tunnel system. There did seem to be more that had been back filled but after a quick dig we assessed that there was no way of getting through if they did lead anywhere.

i did however find this graffiti carving on the way back down the narrow tunnel which backed up the research i had conducted.
