This is located on a disused quary in Kent. The basic idea of chalk mines was to dig out tunnels to mine the layers of flint. This was apparently used as an air raid shelter in WW2 (dont quote me on that).
This site is on private property and anyone planing to visit it should be warned that the land owners will use force to detain you if you are caught...and they have an air riffle. It is quite a large system of tunnels but very unstable and on each visit the site has deteriated and i seriously doubt it will be around for much longer.
anyway...on with the pictures
This is where the original entrance would have led to...
The brick lined sections are to support sections of the tunnels that have a road running above:-
Cross section at end of brick lined section, this leads to two dead ends and the tunnel below. This is to the right of the first picture:-
Some parts of the tunnels are very unstable and there have been some large down falls:-
The end of this tunnel has been blocked with farming equipment!
This is the third brick lined section
There was a little more to see in this place but my torch had died and i resorted to using an LED bulb and the results as you can see aren't great.

obs with led or not still great pics..i forgot me maglite so mainly used me 3 watt led other night..and we are planning visit to said site..Phil the bald bloke seems to reckon he has spoken to farmer..fingers crossed or it will be old fasjhion entry methods..more fun in my book!! | |
